CLIMATE

Practically speaking, Cambodia has four seasons in the year: 1) December to February is cool and rainless; 2) March to May is warming and mostly dry with occasional showers, 3) June to August is hot and monsoon rain; 4) September to November is cool and diminishing rains. As we go to print in February, it is the beginning of the warm season and mid-dry season of mild temperatures – days still offering light breezes, mostly blue skies and temperatures in the lower 30s. The temperature will slowly rise over the next few months as weather builds toward the hot season. Also expect occasional ‘mango showers’ - brief afternoon rains said to help the mangos ripen. Like the building heat, the mango showers will build until the monsoon season rains begin in May or June. Though the next few months (March-June) can be a bit dry and dusty, it is still a comfortable time to visit the country, whether exploring the temples or hanging out at the beaches of the southern coast.

Cambodia has a tropical climate which, like the rest of Southeast Asia, is dominated by monsoons, bringing in dry or wet weather.
As we go to print in mid-December, Cambodia is enjoying some of the nicest weather of the year mid-dry season and late cool season 3-4 months start from November to February of mild temperatures, light breezes, blue skies and mostly rain-less days. It is the best time of the year to visit Cambodia, ideal for touring the ancient temples of Angkor (in Siem reap) and offering consistently excellent beach weather in Kampong soum ( Sihanouk ville)

In summer, the southwest monsoon is drawn landward from the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. These winds bring the rainy season from mid May to mid October.

During the rest of the year (Winter and Spring) the northeast monsoon brings drier and cooler air. Just before the rainy season starts (April and early May) temperatures and humidity are high.

RAINFALL
The southern part of the country receives more rain than the central and northern parts. The average annual average temperature is around 25ºC with little variation throughout the year (annual minimum about 22ºC, annual maximum about 28ºC). However, just before the start of the rainy season, maximum temperatures may rise to more than 38ºC. January is the coolest month, April is the warmest.

TYPHOONS ARE RARE
Typhoons and tropical cyclones that often devastate coastal Vietnam rarely cause damages in Cambodia. The total annual rainfall average is between 1000 and 1500 mm. The heaviest amounts of ain fall in the southern, coastal areas and in the mountainous northeast. In Phnom Penh and Seam Reap, it almost never rains all day, such a pattern would be exceptional. During the rainy season, it is normal to have a heavy thunderstorm of about one hour in late afternoon, while the rest of the day is sunny and dry. However, on the south coast it can be raining days on end during the rainy season.
