Essential & general information about Cambodia

MONEY
Cambodia's currency is the riel, abbreviated here by a lower-case r written after the sum. Riel notes (there are not coins) come in denominations of 50r, 100r, 1000r, 100000, though you will rarely see the highest denomination bills, Cambodia's second currency (some would say its first) is the US dollar, which is accepted every where. In  far western Cambodia, the Thai baht is also commonly used.
Prices are in the currency quoted to the average punter - so get ready to think in three currencies.

ATMS
Debit and credit card friendly ATMs are found in all major cities and a growing umber of provincial towns and border crossings. Banks with ATMs, include Acleda Back in most provinces, ANZ Royal with good covreage in cities, and Canadia for most major provincial towns.

BRGAINING
Bargaining is expected in local markets, when travelling by share taxi or moto and, sometime, when taking a cheap room. The Khmer are not ruthless hagglers so a persuasive smile and a little friendly quibbling is usually enough to get a good price.

CASH
The US dollar is accepted everywhere in Cambodia and US Dollar is the currency of most ATMs, so there's no need to buy riel at the border (don’t believe the touts).  US1 banknotes are particularly useful; bank can supply them if you run out. Avoid ripped banknotes, which Cambodian often refuses. Near the Thai border, many transactions are in Thai baht.
When paying in dollars or baht, change is often given in riel, which is handy since small-denomination riel notes can be useful when paying for things such as moto rides and drinks. When calculating change, the US dollar is usually rounded off to 4000 riel.

CREDIT CARDS
Top-end hotels, airline offices and up market boutiques and restaurants  generally accept most major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, JCB, sometimes American Express) but they usually pass the charge on to the customer, meaning an extra 3% or more on the bill.

POST
The postal service is hit and miss. When sending postcard and letters, make sure the stamps are franked before they disappear from your sight. Phnom Penh’s main post office has a post restate service.
Courier services include EMS, which has offices at all major post offices.

Public Holiday
Holiday may be rolled over if they fall on a weekend. Some people take off a day  or two extra during major festivals. It is widely believed that Cambodia has more public holidays than any other country on earth.
- International New Year’s Day 1 January
- Victory over Genocide Day 7 January
- International Women’s Day 8 March
- International Labour Day 1 May
- King’s Birthday 13 to 15 May
- International Children’ Day 1 June
- King Mother’s Birthday 18 June
- Constitution Day 24 September
- King Father’s Birthday 31 October

Safe Travel
Mines & Mortars
Cambodia is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, especially in the northwest of the country near the Thai border. Many mined areas are unmarked so do not stray from well-worn paths and never, ever touch any unexploded ordnance (UXO) you come across, including mortars and artillery shells. If you find yourself in a minded area retrace your steps only if you can clearly see your footprints. If not, stay where you are and call for help. If someone is injured in a minefield, do not rush in to help even if they are crying out in pain – find someone who knows how to enter a mined area safely.

TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Traffic in Cambodia is chaotic, with vehicles moving in both directions on both side of the road. Get in a serious accident in a remote area and somehow you will have to make it to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Battambang for treatment. The horn is used to alert other drivers to a vehicle’s presence – when walking, cycling or on a motorbike, get out of the way if you hear one honking behind you.

CRIME
Cambodia is now a generally safe place to travel as long as you exercise common sense. Hold-ups are rare but petty theft is till a problem in the major cities and beaches. Late at night, walking alone in unlite areas is not advisable, particularly for unaccompanied women.
In the major cities, drive-by bag snatchings happen and are especially dangerous when you are riding a moto as you can fall and hit your head. Never put a bag or purse in the front basket of a motorbike. Shoulder bags are an attractive target, so on a moto hold them tightly in front of you so that thieves – approaching from behind – don’t have a strap to slash.

Telephone
Landline area codes appear under the name of each city but in many areas service is spotty. Mobile phone, whose numbers starts with 01, 07 , 08 , 09, are hugely popular with both individuals and commercial enterprises. Foreigners need to present a valid passport to get a local SIM card. For listing of businesses and government offices.
Many internet shops offer cheap international calls for 100r to 1000r per minute, though in places with broadband speeds you can Skype for the price of an internet connection (usually US$0.50 to US$1 per hour). International calls from mobile phone shops cost about 1000r per minute.

Time
Cambodia, like Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, is seven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time or Univeral Time Coordinated (GMT/UTC).
